During an aura I get weird tastes in my neck area. When I was little a would try talking during an aura and I couldn’t pronounce words right so nobody understood what I was saying. Actual seizure activity can be seen during an aura. Auras are also known as Simple Focal Aware Seizures

What is an aura in epilepsy?

An aura is actually a type of seizure called a focal aware seizure. It typically occurs right before a more severe seizure, usually less than a minute before a tonic-clonic seizure begins.

During an aura, you remain aware and don't lose consciousness, which is why it's called a "focal aware" seizure. Many people recognize auras as warning signs that a bigger seizure is coming.

Common sensations during an aura include:

* A "rising" feeling in the stomach
* Déjà vu (feeling like you've experienced something before)
* Strange smells or tastes that aren't really there
* Visual disturbances like seeing lights or hallucinations
* Muscle twitching or stiffening
* Numbness or tingling sensations
* Intense emotions like fear or joy
* Feeling like a limb is bigger or smaller than it actually is

What should you do if you experience an aura?

An aura is your body's warning system. When you feel one coming on, try to:

* Get to a safe place immediately
* Stop what you're doing, especially if driving
* Alert someone nearby that a seizure may be coming
* Lie down in a safe position

A MyEpilepsyTeam member shared their approach: "Stop what I'm doing immediately! Place my phone near me. Lay on the bed, in the middle, so I won't fall off."

Work with your neurologist to create a personalized seizure action plan based on your specific aura symptoms.

I’m sorry you’d been having seizures for a few years before you had realized it. I’ve had auras all of my life but I never knew what they were until I had started having impaired awareness seizures and seeing a neurologist which was when I was 10 years old. You’re right how you were so lucky to not have a seizure while you were driving or running machine tools in the shop. When I was in high school I had a seizure in shop class and cut deep into my arm and one of my fingers cutting on a band saw. I was rushed to the emergency room to get stitches. I can still see that big scar and my arm is numb around the scar. That was the last time I used a harmful tool. I still haven’t even driven a vehicle my whole life.

I didn't realize until after I was diagnosed that I must have been having the impaired seizures interspersed with the focal awares for at least a few years. I suddenly realized, months after diagnosis, just how many times I'd been asked "Man... are you okay?" with no clue what they were talking about. I'm so very lucky I didn't have one while driving or running machine tools in the shop. No warning... I don't even notice a skip in time.
