It isn't all the doctor appts and tests that bother me the most, its that I was just getting ready to move and had spent 10 years saving up for a down deposit so I would have very small monthly payments. Now I can't move to the town as the administrator said they don't have transportation services and all the money I had saved was gone in the first year. The housing programs in my area no longer have funds and I can't find a broker who will tell me what types of grants there are any won't work… read more

Credit Unions are great. They are there to help you no matter what situation comes up. I've used the same one for 40 something years. Its coming up 50 in a few. I've made mistakes over the years but they helped fix it. They are there to help people and they do. I prefer them to a bank.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member That is helpful to know. They were so excited to help me that it felt like a red flag, like there was a catch. I've never worked with one before. Any pointers on how to get started?

What resources are available to help with housing and financial assistance when living with epilepsy?

It's understandable how frustrating this situation must be, especially after working so hard to save for your own place. Unfortunately, the search results don't contain specific information about first-time homebuyer programs or housing grants.

However, there are some resources that might help with your overall financial situation while living with epilepsy:

Disability Benefits
If epilepsy has prevented you from working for 12 months or more, you may qualify for disability benefits. You'll need to apply with documentation from your doctor about how epilepsy affects you.

Financial Assistance Programs
Several programs can help offset medical costs, which might free up some funds:
* Medicare savings programs
* Medicare Extra Help
* State pharmaceutical assistance programs
* Patient Access Network Foundation
* The HealthWell Foundation

Consider speaking with a Medicare adviser or social worker who can help identify programs you're eligible for and may also have knowledge of housing assistance resources in your area.

Work Accommodations
If you're able to work with accommodations, having your doctor document how epilepsy affects you could help you request necessary workplace adjustments, which might make employment more feasible.

A social worker might be your best resource for connecting housing assistance with disability-related financial support.
