For some of us, Keppra does not affect us, and that is why they try it first. This medicine has fewer long-term effects than many others. This is why post-surgery this is what they left me on long-term and at year ten we cut the amount used in half. I am now headed towards 12 years!!!

I’ve been taking Keppra for a long time and I do take other medicines, I have had some mood swings, but I didn’t get tired. I guess it’s because I take these other pills that I don’t get tired..

What are the side effects of Keppra?

Keppra (levetiracetam) can cause various side effects that affect people differently. Here are some common ones to be aware of:

Weight Changes:
While Keppra is generally considered "weight-neutral," some people experience weight loss or gain. Weight loss appears more common than weight gain. Some members report that Keppra made food taste bland, reducing cravings and appetite.

Mood and Mental Health:
Depression and mood changes can occur as side effects. These mood shifts may lead to changes in eating habits and food cravings.

Dental Issues:
Keppra can cause dry mouth and gingivitis (early-stage gum disease). The reduced saliva production can affect oral health and increase risk of gum problems.

Taste Changes:
Some people notice an altered sense of taste while taking Keppra, which can affect appetite and food enjoyment.

Important Interactions:
Keppra can interact with many substances including other seizure medications, antihistamines, antidepressants, cannabis, and caffeine. Large amounts of caffeine from energy drinks or coffee can make Keppra less effective or cause harmful effects.

Always follow your neurologist's dosing instructions exactly and report any side effects you experience. Your healthcare team can help adjust your treatment if needed.
