Can childhood absence seizures continue into adulthood?

Absence seizures (formerly called petit mal seizures) that begin in childhood typically improve or resolve by adolescence for most people. About 60 percent of children with absence seizures will be seizure-free by their teen years.

However, some people do continue to experience seizures into adulthood. For childhood absence epilepsy specifically, at least two-thirds of children respond well to treatment and their seizures end by midadolescence. But 10 to 15 percent of children with this type may develop other seizure types during adolescence, including myoclonic seizures or generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

The outlook varies depending on the specific epilepsy syndrome:

* Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE): Most cases resolve by midadolescence
* Juvenile absence epilepsy (JAE): Starts later (ages 10-16) and is usually a lifelong condition requiring ongoing management

If absence seizures persist into adulthood, working closely with a neurologist to adjust treatment plans can help manage symptoms effectively.
