Are seizure clusters dangerous for someone with LGS?

Yes, seizure clusters can be dangerous for people with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS). When someone experiences multiple seizures close together without fully recovering between them, they're at serious risk for status epilepticus - a medical emergency that requires immediate care.

Status epilepticus happens when a seizure lasts longer than five minutes or when seizures occur so close together that the person doesn't wake up in between. More than two-thirds of people with LGS experience this at some point. This condition can lead to brain damage, coma, or even death if not treated quickly.

The main dangers include:
- Brain damage from prolonged seizure activity
- Physical injuries from falls during atonic or tonic seizures
- Breathing problems or choking during seizures
- Risk of aspiration pneumonia

If you notice seizures lasting longer than usual or happening very close together, call 911 right away. Some people with LGS are prescribed rescue medications that can be used at home to try to stop long seizures before they become life-threatening.

Early recognition and quick treatment of seizure clusters is critical for preventing emergencies and improving quality of life. Keep a seizure diary to track patterns and let your doctor know immediately if seizure frequency increases.
