A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Pittsburgh, PA

Hi I recently inquired to my neurologist about my epilepsy being genetic he said historically focal epilepsies are not genetic but he still ordered me a consult with genetics after several failed medications andb past failed resections but the fact he ordered it I'm guessing that means it's still possible. So I'm wondering how common it is to have genetic focal epilepsy. If you have it does it have a certain name or is it just a mutation not a syndrome? Thanks in advance!

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member no my mom's brother has been having them but he was into drugs and alcohol both very heavily to the point its gotten him in trouble with the law several times her other brother had myasthenia gravis which is neuromuscular I'm pretty sure my mom has dementia or schizophrenia so I am wondering if there might have been something neurological wrong on her side

These days I think they do the genetic test as a way to see if there's anything that comes up. Because if it does then it just gives them more of a idea of what's going on then points them in the right direction. I took part in a genetic data base a few years ago, I'm not sure whether there still doing it but the idea is to create a genetic data base then eventually a guideline on treatment depending on what people come up with.
