Grand Rapids, MI

I was in my mid-40s with focal impaired awareness (nonconvulsive) seizures. I went undiagnosed for several years and was having 30-40 a day before finally getting diagnosed. I feel like that really messed me up.

I never had a seizure until I was 53. I am still not convinced I have an accurate diagnosis.

How has experiencing late-onset epilepsy with delayed diagnosis affected you?

Many people develop epilepsy later in life, and the age at diagnosis varies widely. Some forms don't develop until adolescence or adulthood, so your experience in your mid-40s, while challenging, isn't uncommon.

Going undiagnosed for several years while having 30-40 focal impaired awareness seizures daily is incredibly difficult. That frequency and duration without treatment can take a real toll, both physically and mentally.

The good news is that about 70 percent of people with new onset focal seizures can achieve complete seizure control with medication and continue living full lives. Treatment tends to be most effective when started early and taken consistently.

It's understandable to feel that the delayed diagnosis affected you. Many MyEpilepsyTeam members share similar experiences of struggling before getting properly diagnosed and treated. Learning your triggers and working closely with your healthcare provider on the right medication can make a significant difference in managing focal seizures going forward.

Yep, age 62 at diagnosis, focal impaired awareness seizures. What a great way to kick off my retirement. The entire epilepsy package has destroyed all of my plans for post-retirement, and the "old me" is gone forever. I don't like it, but there it is. I'm having trouble with that "Get busy living" thing that keeps popping up in my face on TV and social media. I'm soooo tired of pep talks.
