A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mattoon, IL

I was sitting on the couch and my son asked a question about why my husband was home so early then the next thing I knew my husband asked if my son had left for his co-workers visitation yet. I don't remember seeing him leave but he went right in front of me too the front door. I have had a migraine all day so I was wondering if that could've caused a focal seizure.

Hi Barbara. I have migraine headaches before my seizures hit. I found out that it's one of my seizure triggers. I try to stay as calm and quiet as I can, but it's not easy to do.

I’ll get a small migraine b4 a seizure and a really bad migraine afterwards that can last days, but I’ve got chronic migraines so I’ve always been told that they’re tied together as they’re both brain related 🤷🏽‍♀️

Can migraines occur before focal seizures?

Yes, migraines and epilepsy are connected conditions that often occur together. People with epilepsy are about twice as likely to experience migraines compared to the general population. Migraines can happen before, during, or after seizures.

What you're describing sounds like it could have been a focal seizure with impaired awareness (previously called a complex partial seizure). During this type of seizure, you may not interact with your environment normally and often won't remember what happened during the event - which matches your experience of not remembering your son leaving. Important shared triggers:

Epilepsy and migraine share many of the same triggers, including:
- Stress
- Fatigue
- Alcohol
- Hormonal changes

So while your migraine didn't necessarily "cause" the focal seizure, both conditions may have been triggered by the same underlying factor affecting you that day.

Next steps:

Please contact your neurologist about this episode, especially since you experienced memory loss during it. They can help determine if this was indeed a focal seizure and whether your treatment plan needs adjustment. They can also help manage both your seizures and migraines together.

I've heard of it happening but personally no I get them after. I do have a friend who used to get migraines a lot then one day had this happen and then ended up with a epilepsy diagnosis. I'm not sure what type it is sorry.
