I have autoimmune epilepsy and thank you to everyone's advice, did push for a new blood draw before starting another medication since the last one was 1.5 years ago and since then, already started another medication. The Dr replied and would send in an order to test for the GAD65 antibody to see if that has changed.

Why would there not be approval to test for everything else that was also tested in my first and only blood draw there?

I feel like I already know the answer, but wouldn't he want… read more

Why is your doctor only ordering the GAD65 antibody test and not comprehensive bloodwork before starting a new medication?

You're absolutely right to question this. Since you've started another medication in the past 1.5 years, comprehensive blood testing would typically be recommended to monitor for medication side effects and overall health.

Anti-seizure medications can affect various organs, particularly the liver. Regular blood testing helps ensure your liver isn't being damaged and that other important markers remain in healthy ranges.

Here's what comprehensive monitoring typically includes:

• Medication levels in your blood to ensure proper dosing
• Liver function tests to check for organ damage
• Blood cell counts and platelets
• Other general health markers like cholesterol and blood sugar

It's worth having a direct conversation with your doctor about why only the GAD65 antibody test was ordered. You could ask whether they'd recommend adding routine monitoring bloodwork given that you're on multiple medications now and it's been 1.5 years since your last comprehensive panel.

A MyEpilepsyTeam member shared their experience: "I was having a lot of head jerking, tipsy balance, nausea, poor memory and communicated this to my neurologist. He agreed to lower my dose... and I can't believe the improvements in my side effects."

This shows how important monitoring and communication with your doctor can be for managing both your epilepsy and medication effects.

They do get a lot of information already from FBC (CBC) and LFT which is normally the standard. The dr may order some specific tests like thyroid and cholesterol depending on age and health background.

It could just be to do with the testing background, currently they may have a lot more information to go back on, whereas back then they may not have.

I could say the same thing about my testing background. I had to sometimes wait years in between tests.

I have had the same problem, but sometimes insurance raises its ugly head and will put a limit on what bloodwork you can have done. But I agree with you, I think you should always get CBCs and metabolic panels any time you are changing meds.

Well for the variety of tests you can generally expect for them to draw your blood more than once. Different tests require different mixtures and that’s why they may take more than simply a single vial of blood. Bet of luck and I pray that things get better for you 👍❤️🙏
