Members shared their experiences with Zonisamide after a member asked about switching to it following a hives reaction to Lamotrigine, with many finding it effective and some even noting unexpected weight loss as a side effect. Several members offered important cautions, including the risk of kidney stones (with a reminder to drink plenty of water), potential word-finding difficulties, and a notable concern that it may disrupt deep sleep and shift seizures to nighttime. A recurring theme was that every person responds differently to seizure medications, and staying in close contact with your neurologist about any changes is key.

My husband is a pharmacologist, while studying at U C Davis before going to Children’s hospital research at Los Angeles. We got married 3 years later I was working at UCLA. My husband got a job at FDA . We moved to Maryland. We raised our children in Maryland and one point I was given zonisimide! 10 year later I am on it again it is a safe medication! I wish you the best!

Zonisamide can be effective; however, it has a long-term side effect. The long-term issue for me is that the seizures move to nighttime because the deep sleep is gone. This medicine messes with the deep sleep mode. My seizures were moving to night, and bags formed under my eyes. I was not getting the deep sleep and studies have confirmed this. I was on that medicine for years, and then post-surgery, when I finally came off that medicine, the brain had to catch me up on all the dreams that should have been happening. I am now more then 11 years seizure-free and I am working on my Masters degree.
