Does Anyone Clench Or Grind Your Teeth Really Badly In Your Sleep?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My epilepsy is due to a TBI, which involved facial trauma. I'm sure that has contributed to it. I do wonder if epilepsy plays a role.

I grind (clench) my teeth all day and night. When it's bad in the day, I use ice breakers gum, suck ice or sugar free hard candy. At night I wear a dentist created top and bottom mouth guard. You do get used to it!

Teeth grinding has always been part of my act. Don't worry, things could be much worse...

Apparently, I do and this is only due to the dentist finding evidence of it. But its not something that bothers me during sleep. If it happens I wouldn't even know about it until the next appointment.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I have TMJ where I grind my teeth when I sleep. I wear a mouth guard when I sleep & it helps protect my mouth some. My dentist makes them for me & that way they’re made to specifically fit my mouth. When my second mouth guard broke I didn’t have any insurance & was waiting till I could get some insurance & go see my regular dentist & have them make me a new one. While going that time without a mouth guard I had seizures where I bit my lips & tongue & that made me realize that not only does my mouth guard help with my TMJ but it also helps protect my mouth if I have a seizure when I sleep. If you get your dentist to make you one, there’s a possibility your insurance might not cover & so it could be expensive but it’s worth it. The over the counter mouth guards are just to loose for me. I also go to physical therapy every 2 weeks & she also does the dry needling on my jaws & that has helped reduce my pain level so much from before the dry needling was done. I take Tylenol or Excedrin Extra Strength for my jaw pain. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I've seen two dentists with a focus on TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) to have special mouth guards made to wear at night. I've tried physical therapy, although I don't think I really followed the exercises correctly with that one. I'm now using a mouth guard made by my regular dentist. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my jaw. I didn't know you could get arthritis there! I had facial trauma when I had my TBI at age 11. I did not break my jaw, but I did have a facial impact. I have had issues with clenching my teeth for years.
