A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Maryland, MD

Hi everyone
I hope everyone is doing great. I am faced with a difficult question of whether I should switch medication, hence any input would be appreciated.I am currently on topiramate (25mg) once in the evening . My original dosage was 50MG a day ( 1 in the morning and another at night). Unfortunately I got affected by the most intense side effects such as memory loss, memory fog and difficulties forming words. My neurologist is suggesting I switch to lamotrigine 200 mg a day and I am a… read more

Every situation is different for each person, but I too was switched from the Topamax to Lamotrigine, do to the swelling in my feet and extreme tiredness and fatigue. No matter how much sleep and rest I got, I was still tired. I am no longer on the Topomax and now take the Lamotrigine with good results. The swelling is gone and I'm not walking around like a zombie all the time. And I am happy to say that I didn't experience an increase in my seizures either. That was a great concern I had in the beginning.

Are the side effects gone with the lower dosage or just less significant? If you have been seizure free for 5 years, and the lower dosage does not give you the same side effects as the higher dosage, then I would not switch. However, if you are still having the side effects, then you need to switch --especially because you are on such a low dosage and when you were having them, they were not that often before. Some side effects can be much worse than a seizure (even deadly).

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I switched from laminotrogine to toprimate only the dosages were reversed. What the doctor started trying me out on, or what I can remember him trying me out on. Toprimate is a great anti-convulsant. They had to take me off the Keppra generic because it caused sooo much marital problems. I was listening to other people instead of my husband. It was just 3 months of misguidance and misinformation. I am soo glad to be back where I belong with my husband who actually cares about me and isn't in it for the settlement money. That's was ALL my mom, sister and brother wanted. They could have cared less about what I was going through that particular day or whatever. I'm just glad I found this out now. I saw them in action. I know this for a fact. I know God loves me. He wants the very best for me. He is my Strength. He is my Life.

Mama, at one time, told me during the three months that if you can't tell your mama anything well, I feel sorry for you.

John,
The side effects aren’t completely gone with the lower dosage but they are slightly less.
