I know this much. When I had surgery and finally went off Keppra, my son told me he was hoping to meet THIS dad for a long time, one who didn't get angry about everything.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member To be completely honest I wouldn't stress over it that much. If you are then you should be able to at least request, they keep doing blood work so if anything does go wrong, they will know about it pretty quickly. Thats what they do with me. In terms of dementia they won't cause that. Yes you can have memory loss but you would need to have evidence of what's basically a gradual brake down of the brain to have dementia which is completely different to the memory loss you get as a side effect from meds.

This is the general guide on Keppra side effects. It doesn't mean you will get all of them.

Regarding natural remedies, there is great evidence of the vagus nerve being used to reduce seizure outcomes. This can be done with several means other than surgery of a vagus nerve stimulator: talking and especially singing. There are also studies showing that it can reduce depression to activate the vagus nerve. Have you ever met a member of a church choir that still felt depressed immediately after singing? I haven't!

Turns out it doesn't only reduce stress and depression to talk and sing; it also reduces seizures.

Another option, though I only heard about it on the news, would be the use of a specific strain of marijuana. It is of a purple variety without THC. There were studies 6 years ago of its variety leading to reduced seizures in people whom had no seizure preventative alternative. I don't know what Michigan's laws are pertaining to Hemp based substances but it would be a natural alternative to investigate if legal.
