What Have You Learned About Epilepsy That You Wish You Knew When You Were First Diagnosed?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I learned that good can come of a diagnosis that initially devastated me. I know, I know….I can’t believe it either. 🤩 But it’s true! Earning the label “tenacious” feels like a badge of honor.

I have learned that jobs think of you as a liability now. They never come right out and admit it but as soon as you reveal you have epilepsy you see a change in them. I also have learn bc I have only had epilepsy as an adult and for about 6 years now that you can't let it run your life (may be easier said than done I know) but try living the best you can

I wish we would have known how much your hormones affect you having a seizure. It would have made life easier

I've learned to look for second and third opinions from different doctors all from different medical offices that aren't affiliated with one another because doctors that are co-worker's back each other up and will not inform you if the other made a mistake. A Very Hard Lesson that I learned!

Irene6 the ignorance (lack of information) of others is usually the reason ppl make hurtful comments without realizing it as you mentioned. That’s why I make sure that I I I educate people about epilepsy, what my experiences have been and the challenges I’m faced with. If they want to make harmful comments after that there’s nothing I can do. I’ve done my part. But I think I/we have a responsibility to educate others.
