Hello
Could someone please explain generic and Brand name medication?
I take lamotrigine for my impaired absence seizures.
I was recently given a different name of lamotrigine and since then had a seizure, déjà vu and sore stomach.
Thank you, understand so much better now.
The brand name is the real name of the prescription medication. As for the generic name, this tends to be the cheaper form of the brand name of prescription medication. For example, the brand name medication can be Keppra. The generic form of this medication is named Levetiracetam. The brand name medication can be Vimpat. The generic form of this medication is named Lacosamide.
I take carbamazephine ER for seizures is been wrking good for me just recently had 2 bad one Nov 12 ,2023. Fell bad still sore but feel better then from when it first happened
I'm on levetiracetam, I was put on by my doc, a while ago being on this site found out it's keppra, I didn't know, I have been put on name brand meds as well, I don't really care much if it's name brand and there's no Gen for I'll buy it, but my doc takes what was her prescribing on my meds and am ok with, she's a good doc, my opinion.
As everyone explained, generic is a lower version of the medication. And brand name can be a stronger version of the medication. For example, when i was prescribed Lamotrigine, it turns out it didn't control my seizures. But after my neurologist told me to try Lamictal (brand name) it worked much better. The reason we are given generic meds is because our HMO's will always try to keep medications cost down. So, they will always give us generic meds instead of brand names.
