Seizures While Weaning
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

how likely is a seizure to happen while weaning off one medication and increasing the dose of another? my son is being slowly weaned off keppra
and his zebinix (aptiom) is being increased from 800mg to 1000mg per day.

The seizure will generally increase whenever you have to do this. There are things they can do to plan for and hopefully, cover levels of med that you are coming off, but overall whenever you have to do it the risk is high. When I did it a few months ago they put me on the new med I was going on for two weeks then two weeks later started the reductions. I had to come off 1000mg of Tegretol 200mg at a time. In total, it took 7 weeks to come off it but it wasn't until a month after that my side effects subsided.

I feel a seizures is unlikely to happen when you are dropping the dosage of medication which you are taking, I done this back in February and only side-effects I had was feeling strange for about 5-7 days

Hi ellie. My.experience being weened off Meds in the past was fine, touch wood. Hope he's feeling OK. It's normally when new meds are being introduced for me is when I have the issues I.e. feeling almost a 'high' feeling at the start.

I obviously don’t want to scare you but there’s always that possibility. My seizures actually got worse one time when we changed my medication and I was also allergic to a med that we tried. Don’t try and be like a “helicopter parent” during this, let him feel his freedom but still check in with him and ask how he’s feeling every now and then!

Anytime you are weaning off of medications you have to plan for a seizure or two. It takes time for your body to adjust to changes when you add or make adjustments to medications. How long, that will depend on one's body and how your body will react to the medication change. For example, when i changed meds, it took anywhere between 4 to six weeks for my body to wean from one drug while taking a new one because of side effects from the current one and new side effects from the new medication. The only way to prepare for all of this it to know what the side effects are from all medications you are taking. Or you can talk to your doctor, and they will say, give it some time for your body to adjust to the medication. Here is a link to find out about aptiom, https://www.drugs.com/aptiom.html Hope the medication works out for your son. Lastly, keep a diary.
