How has epilepsy impacted your job search? My last employer, during when I got diagnosed, was so difficult my doctor had to get involved and submit letters to employee health. I had to write up for my staff how to handle a seizure, when to call 911 and how to answer their questions. Now that I am doing a job search, how much do you share upfront? I can't do jobs with a lot of travel requests so if they don't include that until the interviews, I find I have to withdraw my application. I do… read more

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, thank your for the better understanding. it sounds to me, that your body just can’t handle working and the stress along with it. Yet you probably want to work. You might have to try and apply your social security

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member No. I actually left my old job to go to another job and had a seizure before the other job started and in the end, I couldn't really go through with what I wanted to do. And as it turns out I was most likely having seizures at my old job that I had no idea I was having so now I would rather go do something else. Having said that I did get injured at work early last year when I hurt my knee. Originally I thought this was the major reason I would have to stop doing what I was doing. I never thought my epilepsy would come into it. un till I had a sudden seizure about 4 mounths after leaving.

When I did job search , I always went and started at the county Social Service building and had an appointment through the rehabilitation services, with the DRS Councilor. While at the Social Service building, I would do job searching thru the WorkForce Center. Looking for jobs, that I’m confident at doing and won’t get severely injured during or after a seizure.

When having my interviews at the Employer, I always brung my Résumé and bring up my Epilepsy condition. If I don’t get hired for that job, for what ever the reason, I rath not get hires than being on the job and having a seizure. Then getting laid off or terminated from the job, no matter what our rights are through the ADA ( America Disability Act ). I even alert some of my staff .during break, if , when I’ve been hired . Just so they they could be prepared , if I go through one.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I'm in a situation where I have to look for work. When I get declared fit to go back this is pretty much the way I'm doing it. Back to the doctor who then tells me how many hrs I can do then I have to go through a ESAT assessment and then go through the DES job centre.
