Members shared their personal experiences with how both epilepsy itself and anti-seizure medications can contribute to mood disorders and other complications. Several members described side effects from specific medications like Keppra, Topamax, and Dilantin, including rage, kidney stones, memory loss, vision problems, and personality changes that others notice even when the member is unaware. A recurring theme was that managing epilepsy is a balancing act, with one member recommending looking up FDA package inserts for honest side effect information, and another sharing how CBD oil helped restore their ability to teach and stay active after years of uncontrolled seizures.

I am considered uncontrolled as i do not take medication for my epilepsy yet this is the most control i have ever had (go figure...). I definitely have moods all over the place. My epilepsy actually looks a lot like ADHD sometimes. I think medication can play a role but not the sole reason for some disorders. You can develop anxiety just from not knowing when your next seizure will be. Always being on edge waiting for the next one. Emotional outbursts as well

My medications have given me trouble seeing. My eyes will twitch so everything I see is moving around. My meds do not control my seizures. I’ve had seizures for 31 years.

The best thing you can do to educate yourself on the drug is to look up on the drug manufacturer website the “healthcare professional” side the package insert. It goes over everything that is mandated to tell by FDA including mood disorders. This is all on the first page but another part that is very important is the “post market effect”. That means once approved and out in public what different side effects happened and %. This lets me know what risk or risks am I willing to take. You can take that information back to your dr and say “Did you consider ________(side effects) with me knowing I have _____________that can spur or intensify symptoms in my life?”
Hope that helps.

Yes. It's basically a balancing act when it comes down to it. I've been lucky, to be honest. Only ever had one medication change in 25 years and with what I'm on even though the side effects are probably at the worst they have been things could be a lot worse.
