Colds, Coughs, And Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Good afternoon! Could catching a cold/cough affect the number of seizures that you're dealing with? I had more than usual (absence seizures that I'm still struggling to get control of) and I'm congested. I have a feeling those two situations fall into the same category.

I'm not sure, I've never had a seizure when I had a cold, but maybe it's different for everyone.

Absolutely, any kind of viral infection can affect the way your brain reacts to treat it. Infections will always put stress on your body, and we all know that stress can be a major contributor to seizure activity.

For me..absolutely. Anything viral usually affects my seizure pattern and it is sad because viral infections are on the rise so it’s unavoidable. No amount of vitamin C can stop a cold from coming if you are next to someone who is contagious.

Coughing adds pressure to the brain and may trigger one. My concern is keeping my temp down.

I haven't had a seizure when i had a cold. But cold/flu medicine will trigger seizures. Here's a link,
