Does Anyone Feel That Having Seizures Affects Your Immune System
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do you think you catch more bugs, get run down, generally feel unwell more than someone without epilepsy? Could it be from lack of sleep, the headaches, the side effects of meds or the toll the seizures take on your body?

I believe both seizures and the medications make you tired and suppress the immune system. And you’re right about epilepsy continuing the affect brain cells and neurons. They continue to rapidly fire until the brain cell can’t function and toxic substances build up and it dies. All that plus meds make us incredibly tired, often depressed (30-50% studied), and anxiety-plagued (30-50% studied), so you are definitely not alone! As for the immune system, when we are run down like this is when we’re susceptible to bacteria and viruses—do you take vitamins? Now’s the time of year to take lots of vitamin C, multi, and extra B12 if you can. Also calcium: for some reason a lot of anti-seizure meds interfere with its absorption and metabolism into bone matter…

That’s what I can offer you from what I’ve researched. I have the fatigue, depression, anxiety through the roof, and also the bone loss, so I can relate. Try some vitamins, and going for a steady walk always have helped me, but I also am on an anti depressant and anti-anxiety med (you have to be very careful to use the right ones, so if you do go that route, have your psychiatrist get in touch with your neurologist!). Best wishes, and stay seizure free!!

Thanks for that info @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member. I'm generally doing well with everything else and am eating well - apart from chocolate binges lol but am vegetarian, use almond milk, do the shake thing. Feel good mentally 90+% of the time and walk the hell outta these boots 👢 😁. My MRI'S showed normal bone density so all good there but I just seem to have to go off sick from work more than other staff without epilepsy, I just seem to catch everything going. I take B12 and vit D3 at home plus Vit C when I get to work for the energy kick.
Maybe it's just time to admit it...I'm getting old!

I’m always tired and now I have an autoimmune disorder. If there is a virus going around I normally get it. I take a multivitamin vitamin C and vitamin B complex

@RoyTinus Can I ask out of curiosity, what kind of epilepsy do you suffer with, your last seizure and the meds you're on. I'm not doing the Spanish inquisition so don't worry, am interested to know. Personally I'm on 600mg zonegran and 600 lamictal daily.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Thanks for your post Robert, you're right about the sleep, sometimes I don't sleep too well but doc gave me frisium for that which I find really good. I watch myself with the flickering lights as I've got photosensitive epilepsy too and they're very understanding of that in work ie closing the blinds when sun shining directly in...I'm usually okay in work, have the odd off day but the walks to work wake me up and get the blood flowing - as I say though I just seem to get alot of colds etc - don't get me wrong, I'm not bedridden with them, just feel like crap - headaches from meds don't help either.
