I’m Having The Surgery Can Some Tell Me What To Expect
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m now getting treated at UCSF and that where I’m having my surgery .. Can anyone tell me what to expect afterward And did the doctor take you off of your meds after your surgery .. I’m sorry I have a lot of questions from people who are going thru the same issue I can ask my doctor but I rather hear it from the people ..

I don’t know what surgery you’re doing, but I’ll talk about my experiences. My Left temporal lobe brain surgery. I went through many pretests before the surgery. Like the MRI,Neuro Psych Tests!, inpatient EEG and Brian mapping test and,WADA test., those helped to make sure you’re a Candidate it. The inpatient EEG and brain mapping , were long procedures. I made sure I had an activity bag pack. Stuff like playing cards, electric games or today game apps, reading books, puzzles books night snacks and even pop

Then the there were the VNS and DBs. I went through pretests with those before the surgery. The VNS was A in and out procedure. The DBS was a 2 step procedure. You go in for the surgery recovery for a day then go home. Then you go back about a week later for the last procedure. Once you’re awake And alert you get Togo home.

There is one other surgical treatment called the RNS. That one I could don’t know much about

Hi Miss carol ! it my left side of my brain I was told that they pin pointed where the epilepsy seizure is coming from.. after surgery did you feel better and is there a difference then before the surgery ? Or it’s not a big difference between having the surgery and not having the surgery? Did you have to stay on your meds?…. Thank you so much !! I’m having surgery next month so I’m asking anyone who can give me good intel on what to look forward too

Hi Makareli. I had a temporal lobectomy on the right side. Much more invasive ten years ago than what they do now from what I hear. It wasnt too bad. Takes a while to recover but I did very well. I was seizure free for almost four years and off meds for the last year of that. Unfortunately they did come back for me but I think I would have been much worse off if not for the surgery. I feel like it did help and I have spoken to several people who stayed seizure free after theirs.
Mine are now starting from both sides of my brain so I am getting ready to have DBS surgery. No medication works for me so have to keep trying right. I so hope it is a cure for you and you recover quickly! 🤞💜🙏

Which surgery are you having? I had a right temporal lobe surgery 10 years ago. I am also trying to get DBS surgery soon. I’d be happy to answer anything about my experiences with these if that is what you are having.
Good luck!!
