So as I walk down this path of learning more and more about our disability. I have learned that other learning disabilities are not uncommon for people with epilpesy. I had 1 neurologist explain as if there is something majorly wrong with the brain like seizures it's not unlikely for some other odd things to be in there
My self I am dyslexic, So I guess with those of us that were born with epilepsy have you ever noticed or been diagnosed with a learning disability
I know this might be a big… read more
I can’t say that Is truly diagnosed with a learning disability. But since my diagnosis as a baby, my parents were more told a fact, that I will be going through learning struggles. My parents saw the proof, when I started going to school. I went through 2 elementary schools , that I can remember . I had a lot of trouble learning comprehension, cognitive, stutter a lot slow motor skills and needed speech therapy. They couldn’t figure me out and they didn’t have any learning disability programs to help me.
It wasn’t until my parent got divorced at the age of seven, when My mom and I moved into from Iowa to Minnesota. With the support from my mom’s Sister and her husband, they helped my her find Special Ed. Program for me. The school program work great for . They were able to teach me and others at our past and level of understanding. I had to go through speech therapy, for quite sometime. Once every school year the would have me do an IQ test to see what my grade level was in all the recommended school classes ( Reading, Writing, English , and Math ) . They also needed to know where I was with Cognitive, comprehending, memory and how fast my motor skills were. My entire days in school K-12 , most of my classes were LD ( learning Disability ) classes. It definitely wasn’t easy learning, at lower grade level from where other students of my age were.
I agree, many intelligent people have epilepsy.
I generally do not struggle with memory issues. Maybe weird details, but I do not have holes in my memory.
I just posed this question because the more I have gotten into this. I see more people that were born with epilepsy have some other oddities about how their brain works.
I'm glad you got help! So many kids just blow through the public schools, myself included.
My son was born with epilepsy but was also diagnosed with autism
I think as far as intelligence and learning go, we have to take memory into consideration as well. Personally, I started having seizures about 6 months ago, since then my memory has taken a hit. Im not sure if thats from the seizures or from the medications, probably a combination of both. I can imagine being the brain of a developing child who has epilepsy and the dysfunction of memory could really take a toll on your IQ level or learning abilities in general. I also saw some conflicting information stating that some very intelligent thinkers have epilepsy (ironically i cant remember who they were now 😋). Do you notice any problems with memory?
