Has Anyone Ever Done An EEG Monitor For 3 To 5 Days Playing Video Games To Trigger A Seizure?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son was diagnosed with Epilepsy in 2015 he is now 20 years old and it seems to be triggered by video games, flashing lights, 3D movies, and/or lack of sleep. His new Neurologist wants to him to have an EEG Monitor where he stays at a center for 5 days, playing video games to trigger a seizure. The nurse told me this is to see what part of the brain the seizures are coming from. He is currently taking Keppra and Lamictal. My son has conceded to stop playing video games and give it up. If they want to trigger a seizure it’s because they want to see exactly where in the brain the seizures happen and exactly what stimuli might trigger it. He definitely could be there for up to five days but it depends on how quickly they can cause a seizure to occur.

They will wire his head with EEG sensors and there is normally a camera on him at all times. He will be asked to stop his medication. If they want to see whether video games trigger the seizure then they will allow him to play games. They may also do some other tests like flashing lights in his eyes. If they can trigger a seizure an alarm will sound and the doctors and nurses will come into his room. They will want to observe him, as well as see how long it takes him to recover. Once the doctor feels that he he has enough information about the source of the seizures, your son will be allowed to resume his medication and go home.

The most difficult part other than having to recover from the seizures is that he will normally have to stay in bed for the entire time. He can’t even get up to go to the bathroom. They will provide a hand held urinal to use in bed and/or they will bring a portable commode to the bed, but they have to strap him into a harness first.

If they can trigger a seizure in the first few days then he may not have to stay for the full five days.
