What type of epilepsy do you have? I have complex partial, absent/auras, i only had absents as a child, i was medicated and i only had auras until the past few months the absents came back, but i already had a job. This is only my second job though, my first was a hostess, this one is a server. Both times let them hire me, then i was like “ oh by the way, i have epilepsy, its not serious though, they just stared at me though like uhh 😳 “ both times, because i was already hired and they couldnt exactly fire me because of that because thats discrimination lol, i explained that its not serious though, and i only have auras normally, and i explained what my auras are, just a feeling in my stomach for like 30 seconds, like deja vu, and im fully aware during it. And if i have an absent, because i started having them at the time i was hired at my second job, i just told them i dont really do anything but kinda stand in one spot, or keep doing what i was doing before until its done. They were like okay. Ive had them at work before once or twice and they noticed but werent really all that worried lol. If you have grand mal i cant promise that theyd let it fly getting hired and then telling them, discrimination or not, so try it if you want but no promises lol
It can be a little more struggling, when looking for a job , compared to people who don’t have Epilepsy. But it is possible getting work.
It’s the stigma , discrimination and criticism surrounding Epilepsy , that can make it hard .
I have focal motor seizures too, and in some ways yes it is possible. If you don't drive that can make it harder for some jobs. Or if you're having a hard time communicating in your interview due to medication side effects. The best thing you can do is be very prepared. And like others have said, I wouldn't recommend disclosing before they hire you - it's illegal to fire you for having epilepsy but there's no way to prove why they opted not to hire you.
My seizures have changed over the years to partials with & without impairment They're not supposed to discriminate but if you are hired they must make ' reasonable adjustments'.( I found I had to do my own risk assessments though )
