Can You Get Fired From Your Job For Calling Out Because Of Your Epilepsy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had several incidents because of my epilepsy. I had to call out several times and had to keep telling my supervisor I had a seizure. I had to keep explaining it and give it more reason in order to not get incidents or get fired.

Ask your employer about the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). You can use it to protect your job. You get 12 weeks of leave per year. You can take it all at once, or just when you need it. You can use it in 15 mins increments and up to a day or more. I have it for my seizures and migraines. When I call out I don’t even have to say the reason-I just have to say it’s FMLA related. I use it for any time I missed during the day because I had a seizure or migraine. I also use it when I have to have testing done and go to see my Neurologist. I have the option to take the time paid (using vacation, sick or personal time) take it unpaid or make it up. I have flex-time though so I don’t know if making up the time applies to everybody. My employer cannot ask me to provide a doctor’s note and they cannot deny my request to make up any time I missed. Your employer MUST provide you with forms if you request them. (It’s against the law not to.) Then you take them to your dr and they fill out a portion stating your FMLA is for your seizures. Then the forms get returned to your employer to be filed with the state. Most doctors send the forms back from their office. It’s definitely peace of mind to have the FMLA. You have enough to deal with when you’re having seizures-you shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not you’re going to lose your job too. Good luck!

In the UK, no, because epilepsy is quoted in our Equality Act, along with cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV. Epilepsy is seen as a recurring or fluctuating conditions illness along with diabetes and arthritis and many others.
