I had a neuropsych eval and was very disappointed (read: angry) that there was no treatment suggested other than - maybe speech and language therapy. I've been looking up some stuff and found someone on another group who mentioned executive functioning training - which is exactly what I need. I'm excited to have found a "program" that may be helpful. Has anyone done this? It's probable that it's done through speech and language therapists. I just sent a note to my PCP asking for a point in the… read more
Margery - I appreciate your answer. and you bring up good points. I think that there was some misunderstanding as to what I was seeking when I went to see the the neuropsychologist and I apologize if that caused confusion.
We all have our personal responses to illnesses and circumstances that change our lives. At this time, for me, the issue is my overall neurologic response (as you said) to epilepsy, which originates in the electrical pathways of the brain. Some pathways more than others depending on the location of the lesion. In my case particularly, the emotional, memory, and cognitive aspects with TLE.
Also at play is the overwhelming difference is the psychological and lifestyle response to a chronic disease (epilepsy) vs an episodic disease (that, luckily, cancer turned out to be for me.)
The anger that I refer to in my post was the failure of the neuro-psychologist to offer any real treatment guidelines regarding the psychological and cognitive changes that resulted from my epilepsy, AEDs and the need to to discontinue a medication that had treated some of the symptoms for which I am seeking help. I know that other neuro-psychs do that and I was hoping for such guidance and treatment.
But yes, I am angry at epilepsy, I am angry at myself for downplaying the multiple serious concussions I'd had--never imagining that they might lead to epilepsy--and light-heartedly blaming early cognitive and memory dysfunction on "concussions, chemotherapy, and menopause."
I am curious what you thought I was advising others to think by my own attempts to learn how to cope with those changes in myself.
Many here have also noted difficulties with memory, organization, depression, etc with epilepsy and its treatments. My intent was to vent and tell my story; one that others may relate to and perhaps to find some solace and direction.
I'm sorry... Maybe I have heard about some relaxing method. But I don't remember. 🌺
Hi @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member . Between the two test, before and after tests , with the Neuro Psych Test, I didnt notice any differences.
Interesting. Did it change much?
I don’t know if this is the same ,but I had to do a Neuro Psych Test. It was scheduled at my Epileptologist clinic. It started out with a big questioner/ survey , about what actions and choices we would make in different types of situations. I believe it was a personality test. Then I had to do a memory comprehension test similar to an IQ Test . I had to look a picture , study it, then would get taken away . I would then have to draw what I remembered. Then there were the picture cards that made up a story and I would have to put them in the right order to make that story . There were some other tests done .
I believe they had me do this because my seizures are in the speech, language, memory center of my brain. Later in the year I had brain surgery. After I was well healed from it it they had me redo the Neuro Psych Test ( but not the personality test. ) . They want to compare the results of both test, before and after brain surgery.
