Newly diagnosed and thinking of the future
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member my epileptologist told me, from what I understand Keppra had a negative effect only when you breastfeed.
I took them both (Keppra for the 1st one, Lamictal for the 2nd) and they both worked out fine and my dosages were fairly high. The only thing is I didn’t breastfeed and was glad I didn’t when I found out Keppra can have negative effects on infants. Good luck🙂
I started with a very small dose and it took a long time for me to get to a therapeutic dose on lamotrigine. I'm now taking almost 800mg per day. I know the rash can be bad and I was lucky to not have issues. My doctor also told me to take 1mg of folic acid a day, even before I was trying to get pregnant just as a precaution for birth defects. Now I'm taking that in addition to prenatal vitamins which have more folic acid. Cleft palette/lip is the most common birth defect on lamotrigine, but again there's still not a high risk.
Thanks Brianne, thats really useful. I was told today that lamotrigine at more than 200mg increases risk of cleft palette forming, but overall is a good option to take. Keppra is also good, however no long term studies conducted yet to determine how well the child develops later so still leaning towards lamotrigine to try first.
I was also told Lamotrigine is the safest for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Unfortunately, it gave me a pretty severe rash on my face, so I can't take it :(
