What Is Your Reaction When A Professional You Go To See Uses The Word Epileptic Versus The Terminology You Have Epilepsy?

Basically I’m looking at how person first language (also know as Becky as epilepsy instead of Becky is an epileptic or Becky the epileptic and how it might affect the attitude of services) if you could answer it would be beneficial bc I’m presenting on this and want perspectives. Thanks in advance! Please tell me if you want to be left confidential or have credit in your answers on the presentation that I will be doing in the spring, also please state what country you’re from so I can tell if it… read more

I would just tell them that the Epilepsy Foundation does not say epileptic anymore. They only use "a person with epilepsy".

Yes I think labels in general are not always useful because I think sometimes ppl will tend to over identify. Like yes I have epilepsy, but that’s not all my life is and that is why personally I will never identify as an epileptic (I will still say have epilepsy) because I’m much more than my epilepsy. Along with this I know that no matter how bad my epilepsy gets I can still have so much going for my life that I don’t necessarily have to grab on to the epilepsy label to define me as many of us are we are complex and epileptic doesn’t capture our whole state of being. I completely understand that there are different views and perspectives- I am learning from all of you and it’s so important to draw into each one in the presentation I’m doing. So please don’t think just because I have one viewpoint that I don’t respect or value yours, because your opinions on this matter are very important to me and I love all the different responses. I love that we all can reflect in a positive, respectful way 😊☺️

I would take it either way, it doesn't bother me that I have it or that others know that of me. I'm not embarrassed about people learning that of me.

Hi Becky I don't like being called a epileptic this makes me feel negative and abused but I don't mind them saying I suffer with epilepsy

And perhaps the age of the person...epileptic had negative connotations when I was growing up, lots of stereotypes attached to the term. That was back in the '70s and '80s though.
