Aching Muscles And Joints
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone else experienced 'heavy feeling' limbs and joint pain when prescribed Epilim? I was aware of the gastro and weight gain problems - but not if these are symptoms too.

You may have stumbled on something that is specific to you and few others. I was taking Lyrica (pregabalin) over a decade ago and was having side affects with it that aren't even listed. I tried to inform company about it, but they didn't listen. One day I was borderline toxic and could tell I was. So I had to think back about a decade to see what I had changed to cause me being toxic. The only thing I could find was I had added Lyrica. It was messing with my GI tract and causing pain in my eyes. They don't list that as a side affect of that medicine. It wasn't really doing me any good so I slowly weaned myself off it correctly because I knew what to do. The next time I saw my neurologist I told him what I had done and he was fine with it because he would have done the same thing. I see your question was posted 6 months ago so you are probably off Epilim by now. All these medicines are toxic and have side affects, because they are not natural for your body at all. Cannabis is natural for your body, you have specific receptors in your brain for cannabinoids.
CBD (cannabidiol) is legal in many states now for medicinal use and it is non psychoactive so you will not get high using it. I've used it and it works better than any medicine I've tried and there are no side affects. Look for something high in CBD and low in THC (THC is psychoactive) and try it to see how it works for you. I've heard it doesn't work for some people so you have to experiment on you own to see if it works for you. So don't stop taking your medicine when you try it. You have to see if will work for you.

Yes I get aching muscles/ painful joints I've been on so many meds combinations over 20 years plus I've put on weight so I'm sure that doesn't help I had a hip replacement 2 years ago - hip is fine but knees hurt I saw the neuro a couple of years ago & asked if could take Tegretol as it had helped many. Years ago He said he wouldn't advise it as at my age (early 60's ) it would give me joint/ muscle problems Really !!!I was diagnosed with osteopaenia 5 years ago

Similar experience to Carey, here; however, because of the research I've done on this [while studying to become an NP] I'm not so happy to throw out the baby with the bath water. The simple truth is that any drug (a substance used for a targeted purpose) has toxic potential, cannabinoids included. Yes cannabinoids can be extremely effective and I strongly advocate the use of such in many medical therapies [and would suggest it in this context as well]; but, the fact that such works for one patient does not mean that the other kinds of potions we use to treat medical conditions are invalid, nor does it mean that such will be effective in 'treating a different patient's condition'/'healing a different patient'. I say this simply because the above statement is so misleading, yes there are receptors which pair with cannabinoids, but there are also receptors which pair with synthetically produced pharmaceuticals [that is why they have been proven to work]; don't get me wrong, it is true that the less processed the drug, the less likely that it will induce a hyper specialization response [what typically causes negative side effects], but this generalized trigger can also activate/modulate neuropsychological components [even if it's not "psychoactive"] -for good or ill. No drug is perfect, it is that simple; however, if you work openly and honestly with your doctor, you can find the best balance of a drug (remember even exercise, prayer/meditation, diet, etc. are forms of drugs) as a medicine which will help you heal and maintain good health.
