Surgery-question For My Friend
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all, my friend has asked me to ask you all something. I have generalised Epilepsy so I have no experience with surgery, but my friend has uncontrolled seizures and she has been told that she has a spot on her left patial lobe and the Doctors are talking about removing it. She is really scared and wonders if anyone else has had an operation to help with reducing seizures?

Your help would mean a lot. Have you had surgery, if so, how do you feel about it? Are your seizures better now or no… read more

I'd rather of him said what he did to me than gone ahead with surgery & ruined my life altogether. At least I can live my life to the best of my ability still looking like any other person.

It's her right temporal lobe in the hippocampus. They want to remove scarring. We are going to have repeat EEG to rule out the partial lobe.
Hope all is well x

I'm a candidate for the surgery on my left temporal lobe/ amygdala area of my brain. If been through almost all of the tests, just had another PET scan last week to see what the next step is. If it's positive they will remove the larger portion, if negative they will insert depth probes to try to narrow down where the seizures are coming from. Then after that it will be the WADA test before the actual surgery to make sure it's a good idea going through with it.
My advice is find a good group of doctors to help her through the tests and give her all the support she needs. From what I've seen on this website it seems like more people are happy they went through with the surgery than not. I've seen people on here that have gone through with the surgery and not have a seizure for years. Good luck to your friend

I have had brain surgery done in my Temporal Lobe of my left sphere of the brain. In that same area is where my speech, language, and memory center are located. I had to do many tests before the surgery. The did a 4 hr EEG session , MRI test , WADA test, and the Neuospych Test ( before and after the surgery ). Then the Day of my appt at the hospital, they had to prep me for one more test before my surgery. That would be the GRID Test or Brain Mapping, along with the EEG. The Grid is a panel with electrodes inside it . They surgically cut part of the skull where my seizures are active and place the grid panel in that area. Then they staple the skull piece back in place . This test along with the EEG will help the Dr.'s map exactly where the seizures are located. And makes it easier for them do the surgery. When they complete the mapping of that area they will start getting the surgery ready.

Now keep in mind , with this surgery, doesn't mean that we will be seizure free. I'm not saying that it isn't possible either. Hopefully it will at least help your friends seizures possibly reduce by the number , lessen by the frequency of them ( so if they were sever seizures, they may go down to moderate or mild seizures. ) , and maybe possible of being seizure free.

There are a few people, who have had the surgery more than once.
Hope this helped

It is a hit or miss thing. I had it done about 4 years ago and it was unsuccessful, but I have heard of people really benefitting from it
