Is My Bad Memory To Do With My Epilepsy, Or Just Me?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi there, I dont fully understand my epilepsy, and my neurologist isnt very helpful
I've always had issues with my memory, a bit forgetful about things. But since my diagnosis, and certainly within the last couple of years, my memory seems to have gotten worse. I forget when bills are due, whether i have paid them or not. I even forget full conversations i've had with people and will begin the same conversation again. My boyfriend is so patient with me and will remind me when things are due… read more

No it's not just you. Both our seizures and medications make us struggle with memory issues. If your Dr. / neurologist , can't help you with your questions for answers, then you You need a different Dr. If possible you may want to try and find an Epileptologist ( and neurologist who specializes in people with epilepsy. ) or at least a neurologist who is better at helping and answering your questions.

Expect to improve! Please do not anticipate too much. Problems with speech, aphasia, was my first battle as a graduate student. You may learn second and third month of last year, but actually remembering it may be a creation in your mind. However, each of us is a little different. If you are not performing as a "standard student" by American or local culture, just think that standard student never really existed. You can definitely learn and possibly teach others. Please enjoy the life given you through spirit and guidance of the almighty. All progression in life continues in the cosmos.

If you have insurance you could ask for an MRI to see if the seizures have done any damage to your brain which is causing memory loss. Also ask any of your doctors to check your vitamin b12 levels. A deficiency in b12 will really mess with your memory and other cause other issues. Good luck

I can't remember Feb and March last year, nothing at all. I had just been diagnosed and when I was having the worst of my seizures but these resulted from an injury to my head which happened many years ago. After a seizure I cannot remember anything from an hour before and where I am etc. I still have memory loss for example I will forget half of a what I was saying mid way through the sentence, this really effected me at school last year during oral assessments because I would have practiced it so so hard and then all of a sudden there would be nothing there, I would forget my entire oral half way through it. My Dr said this is normal because it was a result of a head injury. Even still more than a year later I cant remember anything from February and March last year.

Lara, you may have already done it, but mentioning the short term memory difficulty to your physician might be of value. Many years ago, I was put on strattera for a similar problem. It also helped in controlling some seizures with a little more mental stability.
