Is The Ketogenic Diet Healthy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm curious to try the ketogenic diet - for one because I'm always looking for new diet fads (!) and two because it could help why I the epilepsy? Sure.y can't do any harm can it? I've already given up meat, bread and refined sugar (more or less - cough cough) I might as well add to the list of forbidden foods? I tried the Atkins once - it seemed to be very high in fat, is the Ketogenic diet the same?

Rosemary, just to confirm did you think the ketogenic diet was for kids or the clean eating diet? Both diets are for anyone. The clean eating diet is really the best thing for all bodies, the IFBB participants follow this diet before body building, bikini competitions. Both are a great way to decrease body fat %'s, heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy as well as many other conditions. After much research on preservatives, sugars, bleached flours, I am much more careful about the things I put in my body.

It is a high fat diet originally used for children to control their seizures. I remember learning about it back in 1980. They started using it with children around 1920 but they didn't understand why it worked. I'm not sure how well it works on adults.

There is nothing wrong with the Ketogenic diet. Yes it is a high fat diet but high in good fats not bad fats. A lot of people use it for weight loss here in America. The more you learn you will see what a crappy diet we have had since the 50's when all this so called healthy food came out and people thought it was good for you. Just like when we all we taught cannabis was bad, more and more people with epilepsy are using CBD to help control their seizures. I didn't think CBD worked either, but after researching it I found out it does stop seizures and I found out how it works in the brain to stop seizures. Now I'm experimenting with the ketogenic diet and CBD to see how well it can control my seizures. Right now most people are burning sugar for energy, when you are in a state of ketosis you burn fat for energy. That is the major difference, plus ketones are neural protectors. Antioxidants and CBD are also neural proctors and they can kill cancer also. Coconut is now considered a super fruit. Virgin or Extra virgin coconut is great to eat daily. Many people use it in their hair or on their skin.

Are you willing to give up most fruit, lots of veg (including carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, etc.), rice/pasta, and avoid sauces? If so, then yeah, you might want to try it out. It's very difficult however and I would only recommend it as a last resort. It makes socializing and eating out very difficult.
