How Do You Handle Being Depressed And No Energy To Do Anything?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

On some days my daughter is ok but there were times that she has emotional outburst towards us. She does not want to do anything except stay at home in her room.

Please let me know what should I do?

Hi - I went through that and still do at moments. What I'd recommend is motivation - she needs to find a way out and you can't do that for her. If anything it will just cause anger. I found groups and activities that were completely apart from everyday life. I go to an art/ceramics group that I found online, I'm also a kid's group volunteer which I love. Without these things in my life I'd be in my room all day miserable and lashing out at people trying to help. Exploit hobbies in order to find these groups and activities. Even if they are only for a few weeks - you'll see if it helps. And no offence - but maybe she needs the time away from parents/carers. I'm 24 and sometimes just need time away from those that are only trying to do the best for me.
Admittedly a few years ago I was put on Keppra and it gave me severe depression I didn't even notice. Watch out for that one. But sometimes it's just needing something in your life - like those groups.

I don't know what meds she is on but if she's taking Keppra, I had the same reaction. It was horrible! I would definitely talk to her doc about it no matter what meds she's taking. The doctor might be able to recommend an antidepressant or some therapy to help her through it. Maybe doc could find a different medication.

I have been through the same thing. I started on the lowest dose of an antidepressant years ago. It did wonders!!! I still take it today Sertraline.

I think depression (at least for me) is a major issue. I've had some time in the black hole. The one that really sent me there was Fycompa. I would say stay away.

what type of seizures does your daughter have.... i often need time alone... and can be moody and aggravated for no reason at all.... also if she has partial seizures.... then seizure control via meds often comes at a price... "The treatment of TLE is complicated by the fact that many times improved seizure control via anticonvulsants leads to deterioration of the neuropsychiatric status. Schizophrenia-like epileptic psychoses often emerge when anticonvulsants are normalizing or improving the seizure activity. If this antithesis isn't recognized, the psychosis will soon become more of a problem than the seizures. One expert, Dietrich Blumer, M.D., has gone so far as to claim: "It is probable that the modern schizophrenia-like epileptic psychoses are largely iatrogenic in nature, caused by modern ability to control seizures." "TLE also may be responsible for chronic rather than just acute psychoses. While any of the symptoms of schizophrenia may be encountered, paranoid traits are the most common. TLE patients can be distinguished from schizophrenic patients by the maintenance, when not acutely ill, of warm affect and good rapport. In addition to the history, the diagnosis of complex partial seizure disorder can be aided by EEG. However, since such diagnosis remains a clinical one, it should be noted that several negative EEGs do not rule out the diagnosis of TLE in a given patient. - See more at: http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/articles/comple...
