Hi, just wanted to see if anyone else has this experience, my mother called me on 4th around 10am, all I could is hear her asking me questions but couldn't get a word out for over 2 minutes. I thought it was absent seizure, but I never had one last that long nor liked that day. But I've noticed moment maybe sitting home and couldn't remember something. It's not the 1st time over the phone either just not that long. Couldn't get my words out. I did felt myself getting irritated. And after a… read more

What you're describing β€” being unable to speak, feeling irritated, and then needing time to recover β€” sounds like it could be a focal seizure rather than a typical absence seizure. Focal seizures can affect awareness, speech, and emotions, and they can last longer than absence seizures.

The irritability you felt during the episode is actually a recognized symptom some people experience during or around a focal seizure. The recovery time you described β€” needing a while to feel like yourself again after the episode β€” is also something worth noting. This is sometimes called a postictal period, which is the time your brain needs to reset after seizure activity.

A few things worth tracking and sharing with your neurologist:

- How long the episode lasted
- What you were doing before it happened
- How you felt during and after
- Whether it's happened before and how often

This kind of pattern can really help your doctor figure out what's going on. It's definitely worth bringing up at your next appointment, especially since it's happened more than once.

Hello DHunter,
My petits are a bit different, I do the side chewing and grabbing with my hand, I cannot speak, but when people speak to me, what they are saying is not anything I can understand, they never last that long as far as Im told, but it's takes me a good half hour before I can speak and make any sense, grand- mals however, Im gone, and when I come out of it nothing makes sense, I can't speak, and Im exhausted for a few hours. So I sleep. I had a petit at the bank once, I was so glad my husband was there,I go quiet, and I could not remember my name, pin number, what I was suppossed to be doing, and I tend to hear voices off to my right side, nothing being said is clear to me, I just have to let it happen and wait until it's over, we all have different experiances don't we? Im really glad I found this site😘

Hallo DHunter ., this be William and Jen .. first we want you to know you not be alone in this .. for me this happen during high stress .. which be my main trigger for any of the 7 type of seizure I be having .. neurologist say this for me be aura .. a type of seizure all by itself .. it be as you say ..I can understand what be said to me .. can prepare a response .. yet nothing come out .. these may last from few seconds to few minutes .. either go way or lead into another type of seizure .. this be confusing .. frustrating .. all the things you say .. as most of my seizures be nocturnal ., with no aura as I be sleeping .. these do not happen too much to me ., and only when I be feeling stress .. my wife Jen help me with these as she understand .. and my three sons understand ., so she or they come to me and hold me or speak gently to me .. that be calming me and it pass.. having family or friends who understand mean the world .. I find taking deep breaths .. closing my eyes .. taking a few sips of water .. looking out a window.. all these help me .. if you be on phone .. like when your Mum call .. and someone be near .. handing the phone to them for a bit often help .. sometime I will hang up the call and text who I be talking to and explain .. then call back later when I be feeling myself again .. if this be first time happening .. checking with neurologist be good idea just so they can make a note of it .. meds can affect us all in weird ways sometimes.. hope this helps a bit .. hugs and prayers from William and Jen πŸ’œπŸ’™πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ•ŠπŸ•Š

I had this happen to me after my last TC seizure during post ictal. I could understand and hear what was being said, felt basically fine but could not talk at all apart from a few words.

I've had similar situations when I have seizures. If I'm with some1 and talking when I have a seizure, I stop talking because I can't understand what I'm saying. There had been times I felt I good continue to talk, which made it feel it lasted longer (seizure).
