Auras are actually a type of focal aware seizure that can happen just before a more intense seizure. They can trigger intense emotional responses, including sudden, overwhelming fear or dread — even when there's no obvious reason to feel that way. Some of the nightmare-like sensations MyEpilepsyTeam members and others have described include:
- A sudden, intense feeling of fear or foreboding
- A strong sense of déjà vu — like reliving something unsettling
- Visual disturbances or hallucinations, like seeing things that aren't there
- An "out-of-body" feeling
- Feelings of confusion or spinning thoughts
One MyEpilepsyTeam member described their aura as *"a strong, out-of-body feeling... followed by a feeling of foreboding and anxiety"* — which does sound a lot like a nightmare.
If auras are happening, it's worth talking to a neurologist about them. They can help build a seizure action plan so there's a clear, calm response ready when one strikes.
