Members shared deeply relatable struggles around employment with epilepsy, with many noting that keeping a job is often harder than getting one due to seizures at work, though some found success by not disclosing their condition upfront or by requesting FMLA protection after being hired. Several members described finding stability in repetitive tasks like grocery store work, remote positions, or freelance opportunities that allow them to work from home on their own schedule, avoiding the stress and visibility that can trigger seizures or lead to termination. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, whether through carrying medical information in multiple places, tailoring resumes carefully to bypass automated screening systems, or creating flexible work arrangements that accommodate both the unpredictability of seizures and individual strengths.

Hallo .. William and I find working from home via computer or hotline answering serves us well .. William's seizures be mostly nocturnal .. yet stress be a huge trigger for him. .. as fr me .. I do not have epilepsy ., I be dyslexic.. especially dyscalculic.. which means I transpose numbers .. we both be introverted in personality .. so we find working from home works best for us. ., also William is brilliant with numbers which helps me out awesomely .. hugs and prayers from William and Jen πŸ’œπŸ’™πŸ€—πŸ•Š

Thank you everyone for letting me know that you relate in some context. Once I start my online courses for this summer, I am going to apply for a student work-study job for online students. The school that I am enrolled in has verified that I am eligible for the FWS program 😁. This way I can do my schoolwork and regular work online 😊.

When I answered honestly on the application where it asks if you have a disability I check that off. I am never asked anything in the interview about the type of disability. I believe the one question I have been asked frequently has always been when can I start and if I have any activity taking place in between specific dates or before a specific date.
I have nothing to hide from the company I just tend to provide better work when the position is remote and I am working from my home.

The struggle usually isn't to GET the job, the struggle is to KEEP the job. I have worked all kinds of jobs -- gardener, house cleaner, dog walker, all the way to university professor -- but I was fired from just about every one of those jobs because of seizures I had while working. THE SOLUTION, the best thing for you would probably be to find work where you don't have to deal directly with other people. If people cannot and do not see you have seizures your performance cannot be compromised. Also stay away from work that involves expensive equipment, stuff you might break while having a seizure.

You know I've actually considered "Inventing" my own position and going freelance permanent. I can work from home on my own hours and not have any supervision. I spent the morning doing research on how to rebuild my resume then doing further steps on how to move forward in specific areas.
I have gathered a lot of notes and now it's a matter of putting everything all together. It's slowly getting there just taking time to get the little bits and pieces of work done but that's what I've been working on this morning.
