My seizures are from birth asphyxiation and I didn’t have my first seizure until I was 10 years old.

It's possible to have a brain underlying brain injury for many years then eventually you have worsened seizures or a sudden TC then get diagnosed with TLE. Where things become complicated though, you can have the injury but not have seizures which means you technically would only have the injury. As a example TLE is the epilepsy diagnosis, but it is always due to underlying issue which is also diagnosed so you basically get a minimum of three separate diagnosis. TLE, The seizure type then the underlying cause.

I have had temporal lobe epilepsy for over 30 years, ever since I was 10 years old. The temporal lobe is where the hippocampus is, which is the part of the brain that stores memory/remember so the dead brain cells in our temporal lobe affect our memory. Before I had epilepsy I could remember anything but the very moment I started having temporal lobe seizures I no longer could remember anything. I’m now in my 40’s and still can’t remember anything.

How can you manage worsening memory and cognitive symptoms with temporal lobe epilepsy?

It's completely understandable to feel worried about memory issues and brain fog affecting your work and daily life. These cognitive symptoms are actually common with TLE - many people experience impairments in attention, comprehension, and memory, along with mood changes.

The good news is that TLE can be treated effectively with several approaches:

Treatment Options:
- Anti-seizure medications like levetiracetam (Keppra), lamotrigine (Lamictal), or carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- Sometimes combining two medications works better if one alone isn't effective
- Surgery may be an option, especially if medications aren't controlling symptoms well
- Vagus nerve stimulation or responsive neurostimulation for medication-resistant cases

Research shows that earlier treatment often leads to better outcomes, so it's encouraging that you now have a diagnosis and can work with your neurologist on a treatment plan.

A MyEpilepsyTeam member shared: "Have suffered from Temporal Lobe Epilepsy since 1985. From having seizures almost daily as a teenager, after 2 brain operations, I now have one a month...if that....and only nocturnal."

Working closely with your healthcare provider to find the right treatment approach can help manage these cognitive symptoms and improve your quality of life.
