Each person is different and overtime if it changes the behavior does too. Mine got worse overtime till they did the brain surgery, I was on 6 different medicines before surgery and I am now more then 11 years seizure-free.

I have had focal unaware seizures, along with auras, for over 30 years. However, out of the many auras I have I rarely go into a complete seizure. Same with my seizures as I rarely have an aura before them.

I've looked in to this a lot and from what I've learned regardless of whether you catch the aura happening its highly likely that a aura did happen before the seizure regardless of whether it's a Focal unaware or TC. The Aura can happen anywhere from 3 days out to a few hrs. Everything has to happen in a sequence for the seizure to happen. It's only when you have generalized epilepsy that things can go very different.

Do auras always happen before tonic-clonic seizures, or can they occur before focal impaired awareness seizures too?

Auras don't always precede tonic-clonic seizures. While they can signal an oncoming tonic-clonic seizure, auras are actually focal aware seizures themselves that start in one specific area of the brain.

Auras don't always precede tonic-clonic seizures. While they can signal an oncoming tonic-clonic seizure, auras are actually focal aware seizures themselves that start in one specific area of the brain.

Auras can precede focal impaired awareness seizures as well. The aura is essentially the focal aware seizure starting, and then it can progress into a focal impaired awareness seizure (what you might think of as the "harder" seizure).

Here's what can happen:

* An aura (focal aware seizure) may progress to a focal impaired awareness seizure
* An aura may progress to a focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizure (spreading from one side of the brain to both sides)
* Some people experience auras before generalized tonic-clonic seizures

Not everyone experiences auras before their seizures. Only a small percentage of people with focal seizures get that warning period of 30-60 seconds that allows them to get to safety.
