A cardiologist, most definitely. I have 3 brain aneurisms, two different types. My epileptologist insists on blood pressure control, so I won't pop another bleed. My RTL cavernous angioma leaked a little blood that left some scarring and is presumed to be the focal point of my seizures. None require surgical intervention at this point. My BP was a little high, now controlled with Losartan, another pill, but that was the extent of it.
Ask for a Cardiologist specialist .
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member - before I was officially diagnosed with epilepsy, and while my new world was being turned upside down, my blood pressure was off the charts. (Remember, the brain controls the body). I had to wait several months for an appt with a neurologist and I wanted answers to make sure my heart was not the reason for my new unstable health. I researched and found a good cardiologist. He was an independent doctor and not connected to a hospital system. I was self pay and received a good discount. He didn't think it was my heart, but I had about 3 visits with him, and even did an at home 3 day EKG monitor and a sonogram of my heart. He told me I have a "beautiful heart". Without having insurance and without being in a system that requires referrals, etc., I was able to go directly to a cardiologist because if it was my heart I did not want to wait months before knowing what was wrong. I was also not willing to go to a primary care doctor who was going to see "high blood pressure" and start me on bloop pressure meds. Remember, you are your best advocate for your health. Since being diagnosed with epilepsy and on medications to stabilize my condition, my BP has been just fine.
Your Neurologist should refer you to a Cardiologist!
Hi Dawna, very good question. I experience similar situation. With that being said the specialist I turn to every six months to a year based upon the activity is a cardiologist. We have chosen for this time period as it keeps a good review of my heart activity and the medications that I am currently taking. In 2020 I had a heart attack while doing laundry, was folding clothes actually. But at any rate, just went to the ER to make sure all was well and they did replace the area with a stent.
It was discovered in my situation there is an issue with cholesterol not being balanced so that brought in my drop of sugar, I changed my diet to low-carb and my cardiologist started to keep a closer eye on me just to be sure all was going well using the specific medication that is being taken. I chose to drink water a lot more rather than drink carbonated drinks or fruit drinks. So water is something that I tend to drink a lot of anymore. What I do a lot more now is add flavor enhancers as the water enhancers have zero calories and they are approved by my doctor. Something that I am also drinking a lot more of is herbal tea which keeps me in a calm state of mind throughout the day. I hope the above information shared has helped.
