When you turn 65, your SSDI turns into regular Social Security. You get the same amount, it switches automatically to regular Social Security.
No you don’t have to wait. They put the Supplement Security Income (SSI) and the Disability payment together so instead of getting 2 checks/deposits they only send one and that is the Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) payment
SSI which is social security insurance you can qualify for with out ever having a work history but just due to your disability. (Most recepients of SSI are unable to work due to their disability, which can either be mental, physical, neurological or a combination of all.) The amount is approximately $850.00.
SSDI is social security disability insurance and is based on your work history. The more amount contributed and the longer the service, disbursement woudld be grreater. To qualify for SSDI you would have to prove that your existing condition prevent you from being able to work despite all possible treatments. Supporting medical and or psychiatric documents would be needed with application package for both SSI and SSDI to verify approval.
If the SSDI amount you are getting is below $850.00 that is when SSI could be applied for and granted. Early retirement is still age 62. If you are born 1960 and after the retirement age is 67. When you are receiving SSDI or SSI you cannot work. At retirement age your SSDI goes over to normal social security without the amount being received affected. Each year there is a small percentage increase to the SSDI amount.
Reading about the US system in these comments is so confusing. 😂
