It depends on what you have as it shouldn't really change. In a basic sense it would either be Focal which means it starts in one part but can spread and become generalised. Or you can get seizures that just start as generalised seizures which means the seizure is covering the whole brain when it starts. I must stress this doesn't only happen with Tonic clonic seizures there are smaller seizures such as absent seizures that are also generalized.

How can you identify what type of seizure you were born with?
Identifying your seizure type requires working with a healthcare provider who specializes in epilepsy. They'll need to observe your seizures and gather detailed information about your medical history.
To determine your seizure type, doctors typically use:
- Video-EEG monitoring to record brain activity during seizures
- MRI scans to look for brain abnormalities
- CT scans to identify structural issues
- Detailed descriptions of what happens during your seizures
The diagnosis focuses on three key factors:
- Where in the brain the seizure starts (focal, generalized, or unknown)
- Your level of awareness during the seizure
- What physical symptoms or movements occur
Sometimes figuring out the exact type isn't straightforward and may require capturing a seizure on EEG. As a MyEpilepsyTeam member shared, "I have grand mals and an unknown seizure that required an EEG while having the seizure to tell what type of seizure it was."
Your seizure type can also change over time, so your diagnosis may evolve as you and your doctors learn more about how seizures affect you. Talk with an epilepsy specialist about your symptoms—they can help identify your specific seizure type and recommend appropriate treatment options.
