Have you or others had a right temporal lobectomy with amygdala removal?
Yes, members of MyEpilepsyTeam have shared experiences with temporal lobe surgery. One member mentioned having two brain operations for temporal lobe epilepsy, which significantly reduced their seizures from daily to about once a month. Another member's son was scheduled for a left temporal lobectomy and they reached out to connect with others who had undergone the procedure.
Temporal lobectomy is the most frequently performed epilepsy surgery and has the highest success rate. The procedure often involves removing portions of the temporal lobe where seizures originate. This type of surgery is particularly effective for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy that doesn't respond to medications.
After surgery, some people may experience temporary speech and memory symptoms, though these often improve over time. Research shows that between 43 percent and 75 percent of people report being seizure-free after this type of surgery.
Recovery typically involves a hospital stay of three to five days. It's worth noting that earlier surgery tends to lead to better outcomes and greater quality of life afterward.
Connecting with others who've been through similar procedures can be really helpful as you navigate this journey.
