My son, 39 years old with Down's Syndrome and non-verbal, developed seizures out of the blue in Jan.2017. He is on Keppra and has continued to have seizures, 1 per month, but back in Oct. 2024 he had an increase in seizures, 2 or 3 per month and it's not getting any better. Last week he had 2 seizures in 1 day and ended up taking him to the ER. His Neurologist is aware of the circumstances but we can't figure out why he has an increase in seizures nor what is triggering them. Any advice would… read more
He maybe going thru what a lot of us experience . He have what’s called Refractory Epilepsy . Meaning he maybe resisting the medication.
I myself have this. I’ve been on many different AED meds and non were able to control my seizures 100%.
I don’t know how severe his seizures are, but my seizures are mild and moderate seizure , were fairly short, ranging between 30 seconds to a minute. And I can imagine if his are fairly long seizures., it can be pretty scary.
Hope you can get things figured out
There are a lot of causes and triggers of seizures. Some of them are fried foods, processed foods, all types of stress, Monosodium Glutamate (mostly in Asian foods), fast food, caffeine, carbonated beverages, cane sugar, food coloring, food dye, energy drinks, sports drinks, aspartame (mostly in chewing gum and breath mints), alcoholic beverages, soy products, chocolate, missing medication doses, flashing lights/strobe lights, lack of sleep, excess salt, pasteurized foods, herbs, seasoning, and spices such as rosemary, sage, and basil, Splenda, Equal, Stevia, Lard, Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, Artificial preservatives and sweeteners (fake sugars), dehydration, laundry detergent, sunscreen, and scented body washes, oils, shower gel, lotions, airborne sprays, surface residue, pork rinds, fizzy drinks, nitrates, and many others. Maybe your neurologist can pinpoint the location of your son's seizures by having an EEG done. Good luck on trying to get your son's seizures under control. I hope some things I listed have helped you.
My son is non verbal autistic age 43. He has clonic tonic seizures and is on Depakote. His seizures are under control , but I know stress causes relapse. Heat and lack of sleep are also triggers. He is down to one clonic tonic per year., with ocassasional partial seizures. Also, I have to limit his amount of caffeine. He loves coffer, but I keep it to decafe so it doesn't trigger a seizure.
My daughter took a long time to find the right combination of drugs to help decrease the number of seizures she was having. She would be on one type and it would be ok for a while and then stop working so back to the drawing board and we would try some thing different. She still not full controlled and this is 43 years later. I can understand the problems associated with non verbal people as I have twin grandson who are nonverbal though not from epilespy or Down syndrome They a very rare Genic. condition called TARP. Good luck '
He has Gran Mal Seizures
