I currently work as a Data Science & AI researcher (Genomics). I would to interact and exchange ideas with anyone in the field of genomics research or related fields.
My long-term goal is to specialize in Personalized Medicine, with regards to Epilepsy Treatment and Management.
I was on medication for a long time (Sodium Valproate & Carbamazepine). The seizures stopped, but the side effects persist till today.
I look forward to the wonderful engagements that I will definitely experience here… read more
Thank you!
Thanks Nathan. This sure helps a lot! extremely useful
We desired to solve not just the problems of the day (1988-1998), but solutions that would last into the future. PSA, CKMB, MSAFP, Drug Misdosages & Drug/Drug interactions, Germstrain Detection, The Human Genome project etc.
Be innovative, & think beyond what you’re taught
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) was designed to study the PSA levels, and the correlation with prostate cancer. A brainchild of one of doc's. Now, used in most everywhere.
MSAFP, was to developed to calculate the risk of an unborn baby being born with OSB, NTD, and other chromosomal abnormalities, also to determine if the expecting mother needed amniocentesis. Given gestational age, maternal age & AFP levels.
The problem: Drug mis-dosages, drug/drug interactions & conditions caused due to the side effects of the medications, any of which could be critical, if not fatal. I was asked to develop a system that would prevent these issues from occurring. A problem with a simple solution, no fancy bells needed, but one that exists today. We caught approx. 2500 instances in the first six months. Just think of magnitude of what can be accomplished if MD's “USED” such a tool for preventing issues & diagnosing others. I can’t believe it doesn’t exist as I developed it in 1992 & used with great success.
We created what was needed to make things work. My work with the CDC was a challenge, but produced research that helped the medical community determine how HIV was transmitted, susceptible populations, how to isolate & prevent it from spreading so that treatments could be developed. This took 44 medical centers across the US. The original model had limited functionality, bc in 1988 we used "Sneakernet", so I devised a model that had the functionality I required. I integrated systems at WUMS & what’s now BJC prior to the medical center being on one network. Quality Controls I enforced assured 100% accuracy. accessible only w/ the proper security clearance.
My Favorite. The problem: Many new germstrains were being interjected into the USA population, the origin of most was thought to be China. A system was needed to detect these strains before they hit the general population. If it detected a new strain, a treatment could be developed prior to an outbreak.
Build an AI system that monitors all lab testing of the patient population at the medical center. As the AI monitors all testing, it learns by examining actuals vs. expected results for 1000’s of patients. When an anomaly of unknown origin was detected catalogue it and check subsequent tests to see if a pattern was forming. By comparing to patient diagnosis and treatment, we could determine if a new germ strain may be present. This required further review, but in the end the existence of a new strain could be determined. I skipped a lot to simplify
I hope that helps
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member the work we did in medical informatics was fun & interesting. My primary appointment was in Lab Medicine. So My teams were beyond brilliant, always thinking outside the box. When you do & have the drive, you can accomplish almost anything. If you do you can do that as well. You'll have more tools & a bigger box.
You are welcome from us here
