Do Any Of You Have A Vagal Nerve Stimulator? Have You Found It Helps With Depression As Well As Seizures?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My doc said a VNS will not help with my seizures but could possibly ease my treatment resistant depression. I am desperate to try anything. He won't recommend I have another brain surgery however. Isn't there an exterior component as well? How does it work? 🧐
I could do my own research but would rather hear from y'all with personal experience.

They set it another way, and the depression can be helped. There are now four different ways that the VNS can be set. Ask your doctor.

Ed4 Your epilepsy over 46 years been kept in control from the meds. May have a few partials but no biggies. We all try to eliminate all with new meds any bad sides Dr takes us off. I have seen various posts bout how well you can handle small seizures. To say meds are worse than seizures not good advice for newbies. All should be glad we now have them. Long term epileptics like us know seizures far worse w/o meds to help .

Obviously everyone is different and their body will adjust differently but I have had a vns implant for a little over 2 years. When I heard it could also help with depression I was happy cuz maybe I’d be able to reduce or stop those meds. Sadly the vns has not helped with either my seizures or depression.

I don’t think you want a brain surgery. I think I read that you had one.

KatherynTemple have you thought of the RNS ? It’s supposed to work 24/7. It’s Suppose to send a signal to the brain when it detects a seizure getting ready to start.
