It’s not bleeding, but I punctured it and my addiction to coffee has been affected as anything hot hurts. I don’t usually bite my tongue this bad, so I guess I’m lucky.

I knew this was a good place to ask this question! I’m going to try some anbesol for now and will definitely talk with my dentist about a mouth guard.
With the pain and frustration this has suddenly caused me after decades of seizures without tongue injury, I’m both thankful for your advice and sorry so many people live with this. Hugs to you all.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , You could look into having your dentist make you a mouth guard that is made to specifically fit your mouth. I have TMJ where I grind my teeth when I sleep & so I started wearing a mouth guard several years ago & my dentist office has made me 3. Overtime the other 2 broke & when the second one broke, I didn’t have any insurance to see “my dentist” & so I put off getting one until I could see him & now I have insurance & I finally got a new mouth guard made a few months ago. During the time that I had to go without a mouth guard, I tried the over the counter ones & they just were to loose & one store brand was to tight. But during the time that I had to go without a mouth guard, I bit my bottom lip really bad that it was swollen, numb, & sore & so I went to my Family doctor but all she could recommend was ice to help the swelling & then not long after that, during another night, I had another seizure & bit my lip again but that time I bit my tongue. This sure made me think of how much wearing a mouth guard can help protect my mouth when I end up having a seizure in my sleep. Of all the years I’ve had seizures, I don’t think I’ve bitten my mouth like that until these last few years. I will warn you that it’s possible that the mouth guard could be expensive. My insurance didn’t cover the mouth guard but I needed it & so I got it. Good luck & I hope you get to feeling better. Your friend in Texas, Becky

Try asking your physician or dentist for a mouth guard. It also helps if you grind your teeth during a seizure.I put ambesol on the lesion to numb it.You may want to swish with salt and water. If necessary drink your coffee through a straw and keep the liquid on the other side.
God Bless 🙏
