High Tegretol Levels
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

What has been the course of action your doctor has taken if your tegretol levels are high but it’s controlling your seizures? Afraid what my Dr will tell me since tegretol is all I have ever taken and I am not mentally or emotionally ready to try a new drug.

Good luck. Tegretol ended up not being a winner for me either

You would most likely have to change or if they can reduce the dosage. I went through this at the start of the year. The Neurologist and esn both said the issue is that once something like this happens if they ever were in the situation where they need to increase again they wouldn't be able to. This was one of the reasons they took me off it.

I was on tegretol for a few years but went to a cocktail as I was causing cognitive issues & made me dizzy. So MD cut dosage & supplemented w/ Phenytoin. Which held me,

I your seizures are well controlled , then he/she doesn’t nor should need to change medication. If the medications isn’t considered a Toxic level , you should be ok. Now if you are feeling overdosed, severely off balance, then you may want to tell the Dr.

Another option your Dr. Could do, is to reduce your Tegratol meds down a little, while adding a new medication with it.
