What Do You Do For Work?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

It seems as I get older the harder the seizures are getting for me the rest of that day, night and the next day and it's hard for me to call off when I have a seizure even if I feel terrible because I'm the only person who knows how to do my job, working in medical I thought they'd be more flexible with me but there not so now I'm thinking about looking for one that can be more flexible with me. What does everyone else do that is flexible with their epilepsy and willing to work with them?

I've had to change career maybe 4 or 5 times. I now work from home full time as a customer service rep but essentially doing call centre work but its at home. So if I have a seizure, it doesn't really effect my job.

Naomi, I am working from home part time doing web-based research for a private company, but I was very lucky to find that one. It’s hard to work outside the home without a ride, and my computer skills can barely keep up. So my one recommendation would be to have a plan: a type of work, find potential jobs/ employers, and if possible fill out some practice applications before you quit/ leave your current position. That’s just my two cents, though… 😏

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member glad to help. I had at least two seizures at work and everyone was just kinda like oh well. They took very good care of me.

Also in the Spring of 2000, I was a Kindergarten teacher at a private school in Daytona Beach area. All teaching jobs I was able to get rides from family members. Father passed November 2004, and my mother passed away in February 2010. Now I live on my own, main mode of transportation is walking, however I use a cab for public transportation ie to get to a doctor's appointment.

I have worked for a large financial institution for 24 years now. I have worked from home for the last 15 years (non-Covid related), but after Covid, the CEO is pushing STRONG to have everyone back in the office - even if you weren’t before it. Since I just started my seizures again, I am fighting with HR to allow me to continue working from home. I would never quit because of it though, they will have to fire me (if it comes to that). I have been there so long, they would have to provide me a sweet package. No way am I leaving that on the table!
