A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

For those who have had brain surgery, specifically a craniotomy, what mental side effects did you have after the surgery? Do you feel if it affected your mood, causing or contributing to depression, anxiety or paranoia? Please share your experiences with this. Thank you!

It was the second Temporal Lobe surgery and a month after that I had a seizure. I became depressed because all of the tests before the surgery and the Neurosurgeon had said this was the one and didn’t..It took a month after that for Me to get back to My normal self again!

I had a right frontal lobectomy, removed a portion of my brain where my seizures were starting. A few years later I noticed my emotions flattening. I didn't feel the higher joys with my children, I wouldn't have admitted I was depressed then, but looking back I was. Now 20 years later I have severe anxiety and depression, and cognitive impairment. I know I fought against my neurologists for years when they told me everyone who has epilepsy is depressed, and they need to be on antidepressants. So I was in denial possibly. But I didn't and still don't agree with her statement.

I had my left temporal surgically worked near my speech, language and memory center of the brain.

I was given painkillers, when my headaches acted up. I was told to take an easy for for 6-8 days and had a weight limit carrying things. When I had my next appointment with my Dr. Head Checked my head over and would give me the ok or I had to still take an easy. The area of your head being surgically remove may feel like Jello gelletain . That will feel like like for awhile untill that area of th rain,is fully healed.
