Has Anyone Found That After Taking Allergy Meds If You Stop Taking Them Then Your Seizure Activity Goes On The Rise?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

This year was tough for me because I got COVID and after that developed an allergy problem which if I took Claritin felt so much better. The issue now is if I stop the Claritin my seizures are on the rise again. Has anyone ever had something like this occur to them?

Ah yes. Don’t you think the ways capitalism and health care intersect are…interesting?

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I still take them but not every day like I was. The other thing is given everything I know now tbh I don't really know how GPs & pharmacists are allowed to recommend them to people who take antiseizure drugs.

It would differ by individual. Depending on my mood, severity & proximity, I take Benedryl, or Zyrtec, maybe Chlorpheniramine, all w/o issue. I do not recommend Chlorpheniramine. My favorite being Actifed, but it's no longer available.

Like @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member said, it may be a Drug/Drug interaction. Check w/ your GP & also Pharmacist, as the Rx should have a better idea. In my case I have Neurologist, several other specialists to deal w/ all my issues, as well as my GP, but they all use the same Rx, (CVS). Thinking about it, the Pharmacist doesn't charge by the hour so you may get more time w/ him.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member yep. They can very easily interfere with the seizure meds. You can really only take allergy meds under guidance by the GP and Neuro.

Allergy drugs initially worked but made me feel sleepy and ill in the long run. They also sabotaged my seizure epilepsy meds…! I avoid them.
